Re: Connect two pcs with crossover cable

Hi,

If the first test doesn't show your choosen IP then none of the other checks/tests will work.
Seems like you didn't reload your new configuration..
Check what you have configured in /etc/network/interfaces is still there.

Then type /etc/init.d/networking restart or ifup eth0

And ifconfig again to make sure the IPs are there.

Anyways I'm off to bed, if you're still having trouble I'm sure someone here will point you the right way.
Although your questions are so fundamental you're better off just googling the answers.

Good luck,

Tim

Thanks for your help, and apologize for my ignorance.

On the first machine:

# ifconfig eth0
eth0      Link encap:UNSPEC  HWaddr 00-03-0D-53-25-5C-86-16-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00
         BROADCAST MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1
         RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
         TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
         collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
         RX bytes:0 (0.0 b)  TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)

On the second machine:

# ifconfig eth0
eth0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:23:8b:a2:6b:02
         BROADCAST MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1
         RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
         TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
         collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
         RX bytes:0 (0.0 B)  TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)

I don't know: do they?

I don't know how to do that

I see a red light on the NIC of the second machine, no light on the NIC of the
first machine

I don't know how to do that

# ssh -vvv 192.168.0.2
