I just installed it from the repos.

Are you running into trouble?
Starting the tigervncserver in the way i indicated will start it's own X session, aka it won't "share" your desktop.
To do that' you'll need x0vncserver, or x11vnc.
x11vnc is in the repos.

Is there some sort of idiot's guide for setting this up? I don't want to spend the rest of the
evening trying to figure this out. I just want to connect to a running X server to play around
with Firefox and Co, but getting VNC set up is frustratingly overly complicated.
