Tigervnc works well.
Use RAW encoding and disable JPEG compression if used on a local network to limit the overhead.
Firefox is very usable like this actually!  I am still enjoying it and testing it as we speak :)

once installed, define your Xsession, and launch the server as unprivileged user with:
tigervncserver -localhost no -cleanstale
