So your modprobe worked okay. Just run a mixer app like alsamixer to
turn up the volume. That should be all that is needed.
Note there have been some fixes to this driver since 2.6.8.

Alsaconf will work with a patch I've submitted last november. It is in
2.6.15, or search the archives.
