Thanks to those who were able to a) find the problem I and others
reported, b) identify the cause, and c) patch the bug, and d) compile X
over again.

Please note that Richard's patch has now been accepted into the XFS' SVN repository, so that with the next X upload fixed packages are going to be available in unstable. Quoting [0]:

Apply patch from Richard Mortimer to fix the XFree86 X server's ELF object
loader to set the PROT_EXEC flag on mmap()ed modules regardless of machine
architecture. (It was already trying to do this, but there are two
preprocessor statements involved, and we were only patching one.)
 (Closes: #280384)

Good work.
