FTBFS question on sparc

One of my packages FTBFS on sparc claiming:
checking for X... configure: error: Can't find X libraries. Please check 
your installation and add the correct paths!


All other architectures build OK without complaints.  Does X work
differently on sparc?  I Build-Depend on all the proper libraries (AFAIK).
