i struck what sounds like this on x86 also.

some messing aroung with apt-get install -f made progress, but didn't
resolve the problem.

in the end, i removed python (which took a fair few things with it),
and was then able to proceed.

it looked like some sort of issue between python2.3 and python, but
i'm not sufficiently aware of what apt is doing to resolve it.
