sparc32 hypersparc 150 smp followup

The problem I had two months ago with hypersparc SMP was during boot 
sequence
the system hung.   I have the impression that on this list the 
possibility that those hangs
were not due to the kernel so much as they were due to other parts of 
the system
was mentioned, and that perhaps those glitches elsewhere have been fixed.

Is that true?

Also, if I build a custom 2.4.? SMP kernel what compiler should I be using?
And should the source be vanilla or debian patched?
