apt-build openssl problems

(context is debian unstable, late Sept '03)

I tried to use apt-build to optimize openssl
for my hypersparc ss20 but apt-build failed
to build a deb package.

After it broke, though, I went into the
build/openssl* tree and ran 'make install'
as root and it installed fine (??).
(I didn't want to waste two hours of compiling)
It does make a big difference logging in via
ssh (2 seconds versus 10 seconds).

"apt-build install sasl2-bin" fails -- I'm guessing
no source package available. Binary install breaks
on the missing libcomerr1-k... bug (?) that cropped up
in unstable a week or so ago. I tried to use
apt-build to pull in some courier packages and it
went into an infinite loop, rebuilding the same packages
in its repository over and over every 3 or 4 hours.

BTW, be careful with 'apt-get dist-upgrade' in unstable
if you have amavisd-new because the dist-upgrade will rip
amavisd-new out of your system. Between that and having
sasluathd ripped out by a prior 'apt-get dist-upgrade'
my mail server is feeling rather vulnerable.

Just some FYIs while I wonder about my sanity.
