Owen,

Creation of a boot floppy also fails when
installing woody on a Sparc 2 from the
rescue diskette ... for me at least. I
don't recall ever getting the boot floppy
from potato either.
I wonder whether some variants of floppy
drives are problematic and happen to be
overlooked when the installer is tested?
Maybe you can make or get a rescue diskette
and use it to write the boot block.
