I had a similar problem with the bigmac driver under 2.2.19, I think
it was.  Probably 2.2.17 as well.  It just wouldn't shut up about the
missing carrier on the transciever or something, even though it was
working just fine with the TP RJ45 port, so I just commented out the
offending code in the driver for that module and recompiled.  I
haven't seen the message since.

There might be some module load time options for preselecting the
xciever or TP instead of autodetecting, which could stop this, but I
don't know what they are.
