Disk Related Problems on SS20

On a SPARCStation|SPARCServer 20, with 2.4.17 from the kernel-source 
package:

Heavy disk activity seems to freeze the kernel, no panic, and I can still 
get to the prom. But badblock, mke2fs and an rsync of a few hundred megs 
does it.

The problem doesn't seem to appear under 2.2.20 from the unstable 
kernel-image.

Running unstable, kept up-to-date.

I would like to a) learn how to debug this, b) get it fixed as I do need 
2.4.x: tmpfs, ext3 & iptables.
