Well, his was a different problem.  I'd recommend hooking up a serial cable
and seeing what, if anything, comes spewing out as it starts up.  Something
going wrong with the startup will mean that the LED won't come on.  Unlike
a PC power LED, the sparc LED is controlled via a software toggle.  I've
had machines do this before when they had memory or other problems (I seem
to recall an Ultra 1 that did the same thing when it's creator card had a
bent pin).

One other thing you can do is hold down Stop-N while it powers up (this
assumes a keyboard is attached, not a terminal).  This will restore all
defaults in the OpenBoot PROM.
