The washed out colors are almost certainly due to the code picking a
visual with an unexpected gamma correction value. When the data goes
into the RAMDAC, it can go through either an uncorrected path, or one
that adjusts for the (presumed) properties of the monitor. Most people
prefer a bigger gamma correction value...
There should be a way to set it, but unfortunately I don't know how to
do that.
