You can test for exemple with solaris 9 + gnome 1.4 VS linux 2.4 + gnome 1.4.
I use wmaker on my ultra 5, and wmaker is faster than CDE 1.4
I'm sure, if you test solaris 9 with gnome 2.0b + enlightenment VS linux + wmaker, you'll say linux is faster than solaris :)
