No drm for X with 2.4.18 kernel

X starts for me but drm fails.

Relevant XFree86 log snippet:

Relevant config file entries:
srz@kanga:~$ grep -i drm /boot/config-2.4.18
CONFIG_DRM=y
CONFIG_DRM_FFB=y
# CONFIG_DRM_TDFX is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_R128 is not set

I'm using a custom kernel but I don't see why that would make any
difference. Should I not be building DRM into the kernel? On my Sony
Vaio doing so is essential to getting everything to work correctly.
