Re: quick help booting a Ultra5

Stupid operator error!

All better now :)

BUT IMPORTANT OBSERVATION.

This Ultra 5 was formerly in a server environment where it was on 24/7
for a number of years.

I removed the cover for an inspection of Sun's PCI/IDE handiwork and
noticed something quite CRITICAL.

This has possibly been covered by a SUN service note, I don't know.

THERE IS POTENTIALLY A SERIOUS FAULT WITH SOME COMPONENTS.

On the motherboard next to processor heat sink there is a row of
electrolytic capacitors. I noticed a number of these had typical failure
indications (elevated dome like tops) and a couple had begun to leak
electrolyte onto the motherboard. THIS CAN CAUSE MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH THE
CIRCUIT TRACKS ON A BOARD.
The proximity to the CPU is a major concern. These components need to be
replaced and the board cleaned to prevent further corrision.

I have had experience with similar problems on other electronic
equipment, the problem ofter is associated with bad batches of
capacitors or simple heat stress on the capacitors.

Given the design of this particular board, my experience leads me to
suggest that this could be a problem with any number of Ultra 5's and
possibly any other Suns with the same board layout/construction.

I may sound rather dramatic about all of this, however my professional
employment is electronic technician and I have seen the effects of leaky
electrolytic capacitors only too often.

PLEASE TAKE 5 MINUTES TO INSPECT INSIDE YOUR SUN ULTRA 5.

email me with any queries, I will be documenting the matter online as
soon as I have affected the repairs.

Regards
