It almost sounds to me that setterm is blanking out your screen during
disuse. I'm not sure what init script changes this, maybe someone else
can tell you this, (/etc/rc.?/) but it's one of the sysinit scripts
that gets run when the machine goes into multiuser mode, I think. 

I know the command to fix it would be /bin/setterm -blank 0 would keep
setterm from blanking the screen. If you found which initscript that
was in, you could edit the time period until it blanks and set it to 0.
