Sounds like a hardware fault maybe?

My SparcStation 5-110 w/128mb is running fine with 2.2.19-pre1

[ian@pingu:~]$ uname -a
Linux pingu 2.2.20pre1 #1 Mon May 7 17:52:36 BST 2001 sparc unknown

[ian@pingu:~]$ uptime
  3:56pm  up 243 days,  5:21,  1 user,  load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00
