Creator3D + X 4.1.0.1

i'm running woody on an Ultra 1 200e with a Creator3D card and XFree86 
4.1.0.1.  the box is running a vger kernel compiled from today's (06 oct)
sources, and the following occurs with 2.2.19 as well.  

starting X fails with the following error:

libdri.a loads fine the first time the server goes to load it:

anyone have any ideas?
