Just don't ask DJ Berstein that question - he swears that qmail is the
fastest MTA on Earth. And the most secure MTA on Earth. And heavily
flames anyone who suggests otherwise (or so I've heard). And don't even
*start* to ask him about postfix - he and Weiste Venema (one of the head
guys behind postfix) seem to not get along very well...
Personal preference is very high on the list of reasons to choose one MTA
over another.
Sometimes support issues come into play, too - I'm guessing that here at
the university we've been sticking with sendmail 8.9.3 because HP (we use
HP-UX 10.x and 11.x) 'prolly won't give us tech support on anything else.
Another example: at the local LUG qmail is heavily recommended to
newcomers because that's what most of the experienced folk (except for me
:) use and recommend and can help people with.

Top of the list: a very simple, very powerful, and incredibly
well-documented, configuration mechanism.
Actually, that's really the only one that I can think of right now :)
