  About Q2, mouse on console:
Yes, use gpm.

  # cat /etc/gpm.conf 
  device=/dev/sunmouse
  responsiveness=
  repeat_type=
  type=sun
  append="-3"
  #

And

  # grep mouse /etc/X11/XF86Config 
	  Device "/dev/sunmouse"
  #

I have an U10 with Mach64 onboard chip.
