I've tried that and BusMouse already:

,----[ Protocol: BUS ]
| (**) Option "Protocol" "BUS"
| (EE) Generic Mouse: Unknown protocol "BUS"
| (EE) PreInit failed for input device "Generic Mouse"
| (II) UnloadModule: "mouse"
| (WW) No core pointer registered
| No core pointer
`----

,----[ Protocol: BusMouse ]
| (**) Option "Protocol" "BusMouse"
| (**) Generic Mouse: Protocol: "BusMouse"
| (**) Option "CorePointer"
| (**) Generic Mouse: Core Pointer
| (**) Option "Device" "/dev/sunmouse"
| (EE) Generic Mouse: cannot open input device
| (EE) PreInit failed for input device "Generic Mouse"
| (II) UnloadModule: "mouse"
| (WW) No core pointer registered
| No core pointer
`----

/dev/sunmouse is there and worked with xserver-xsun24.

    Ben> (or /dev/misc/sunmouse with devfs).

I'm still running a 2.2 kernel as recent CVS kernels crash while
booting due to some "unsupported unaligned load/store trap for kernel
at ...". I didn't have time to track this down yet.
