Yes. AFAIK Linux on Sparc tries to detect the PCI cards directly 
instead of using the ~BIOS like it could on a PC (You can choose 
direct/BIOS on i386).
I use an Adaptec 2940 UW and a 2940 U2W without OBP firmware on my
Ultra 5, and that works fine. The machine boots from the original 
IDE disk.
