thanks for your reply Ravi, here is how the devices were installed:

lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root            8 May  3 15:15 mouse -> sunmouse
crw-------    1 root     root      10,   6 Apr 24 12:32 sunmouse

any ideas ?? anyone ??
