It would really help if you gave a specific 2.2.x version that you tried.
Sparc modifications aren't always as current as the i386 tree in the stock
kernel. Also I'de truly recommend you build kernels for Sparc using the
vger CVS (http://cvs.on.openprojects.net, module=linux, tag=linux_2_2).
