Problems compiling a kernel on a Sparc 1+

I just came into a Sparc 1+ and instantly installed Linux upon it...(via
floppies) and I then proceeded to update the kernel image to 2.2.1 so I can
install all the new versions of libc6 and such for compiling a 2.2.x
kernel....I got a kernel source for 2.2.9 and when I try to make config or
menuconfig I get a segfault and the help screen for ld.so comes
up....telling me that I probably didnt mean to run this...I also tried with
2.2.1 and same problem....could anyone get me on the right track?
