 I haven't followed this thread carefully enough to know the entire
situation, but would it work to set up a pin (see apt_preferences(8))?

Package: fam
Pin: release a=*
Pin-Priority: -1000

 (can you say release a=*?  try with  release a=stable  if a=* doesn't work.)
 
 [off topic] One small wish I have is for Package: apt* to work.  As it is,
Package is either a fixed package name, or *.  If there's a group of
packages that you want to pin, you have to name them one at a time.  A regex
or glob expression would be nice.  I guess I should just go file a wishlist
bug.
