Thanks for the reply, you nailled off two questions in one response :-D

Now I understand why BIND would crash when I was simply copying the named
binary from the deb package into the chroot tree. The chroot-DNS-Howto was
RedHat orientated, obviously Debians version of BIND needs a little more then
the standard C libraries to function properly!
