Re: How to properly cite Debian in an academic work?

Hi again Joost,

I was not clear in my first message, my use case is to cite
the Debian Operating System.

It was my mistake to use the sentence: "the Debian project
as a whole", sorry.

The real case is, I'm writing a paper right now about a software
tool I've developed and I used Debian to develop it, I would like to
cite the Debian OS in this paper, just to make it clear that the
work I did was made using the Debian OS.

Thanks for your comments,

Hi again Joenio,

In your original post, you asked on how to cite "the Debian project as a
whole". But what do you mean by that? The Debian project is an informal group
of people and Debian is used to refer to the Operating System. (And it's not a
legal entity.) What is your usecase? Are you actually trying to refer to
some specific product shipped by the Debian project?

Bye!

Joost

Hi Joost,

Thanks for your answer.

Citing an "Operating System" is in fact something that I'm not sure
how to proceed.

But software is something we could cite, and in fact there
is a movement inside the academic field to give more visibility
and to recognize the work of software authors.

In the last few years some initiatives were created to improve the
quality of software citation, one example is the CITATION File Format
(CFF)[1], it provides citation metadata for software or datasets.

Another example is the CodeMeta Project[2], but those 2 examples are
mainly designed for software projects created with academic purpose
in mind, what is not the case of Debian, however I don't think it
hurts to bring those into Debian, if possible.

By citing Debian I mean a citation to the Debian project
as a whole rather then citing a specific package inside Debian.

When I search on Google Scholar for the string below.

"Debian Operating System"

I can find some results, such as [1] and [2], that could be
used to cite "Debian - The Operating System" but I'm not sure
it would be the best approach.

Do you have any recommendation or references where can I find
more info about this topic?

[2] https://dl.acm.org/doi/abs/10.5555/1212556

I think scientific citations refer to texts / books / articles, not to software
collections? So The Debian Operating System we ship is not a publication which
could be cited?

My € 0,02.

Bye,

Joost
