Thanks for the hint but switching to vtk9 leads to cmake errors:

-- The imported target "vtkgdcmsharpglue" references the file
   "/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libvtkgdcmsharpglue.so"

* The file was deleted, renamed, or moved to another location.
* An install or uninstall procedure did not complete successfully.

but not all the files it references.

This does not happen with vtk7.  But may be it needs ITK5?
