I usually check my packaging like this:
(1) git-buildpackage -S -us
this gives me a source package in my ~/Debian/build/ directory, which of
course includes checking out an orig tarball automagically as you ask
(2) pass the obtained source package through lintian (step 1 already
did, but with less options)
(3) pass the source package through pbuilder, which will make sure I got
the build deps right
(4) pass the binary package through lintian
(5) since a few weeks, I might also pass the source package through a
clang-enabled pbuilder.
I didn't know anybody was using pristine-tar directly...
