This is a corner case. It's science in an educational view. Cognitive
neuroscience or psychophysics, perhaps. Which would you consider
useful?

I'm an optical engineer and find it fascinating how the brain can
simulate the effects of parallax from a 3D scene simply because it
detects slight pixel offsets in a 2D image between the input of each
eye. This gives people (and possibly researchers) the ability to
generate their own autostereograms - which perhaps is useful to
cognitive neuroscience. Again, I'm in applied physics so my opinion of
where this fit may not be appropriate.
