Well, it preserves the edit history within /debian, which for me is
enough.  In some cases there is probably a clever way to pull the
upstream history from the svn repo using git-svn. For the packages
that were /debian only in the repo, that history seems not be there.
It should be possible to use git-import-orig to import tarballs in
sequence for all of the versions you want.

Well, it could be a nice general tool (sortof git-import-dsc++), but there
are many nice projects :-).
