Hi again Yury:

I just downloaded XOP again from teh ESRF site and tried it on another 
machine running sid.  It works fine.

The kernel, as you can see below, is a new one.

Linux oxide.phys.iit.edu 2.6.18-3-k7 #1 SMP

I will try again on my other computer and let you know more later.
