sounds like some problem with the Qt installation alone. Can you confirmn the Qt tests do work properly there? (by the way which version of Qt on LD_LIBRARY_PATH ? )

This could be a problem with the Qt GUI stuff in ROOT. I may be wrong,
but I think `TRootCanvas' isn't what should be used in for making the
canvas when you want Qt widgets. Hopefully Valeri Fine has something
to say about this.
