I had Linux running (in 1999) in a VM guest.  Other guests were VM/CMS
and VSE (Batch and CICS).  The host ran VM native (no LPAR), and
everything in there as a VM guest.

Most shops I know run MVS in an LPAR, so you can run VM in another
LPAR and use guests there or run Linux in LPAR mode too.

Because these types of installation can run easily independent of each
other.  That's what I like on S/390 hardware.

The guest must run in ESA (/390) mode, not /370.  Depending on the
applications and the available Memomry for VM I'd use 64MB or more
virtual memory.  My personal guess is, that you should size your Linux
guest for no paging and let VM page.

Disk space and swap are more or less like on Intel.  There seem to be
things like sharing /usr that may help you, but I never used that.

IBM should have lots of people with knowledge about Linux/390.  You
need to tell more about your applications, so you can size your
machine accordingly.
