Во времена 2.4.0 в моем случае ядро просто валилось в течение часа, будучи собранным с поддержкой SysRq, вне зависимости от настроек sysctl. Я сделал вывод, что не настолько это и безобидная вещь и больше не переживаю по поводу отсутствия ее поддержки в дистрибутивных ядрах, чего и Вам желаю.
