patron library segfaults when tested with ruby 1.8

Hi,

Reported it upstream here https://github.com/toland/patron/issues/63

I think I'll build this library only for ruby 1.9.1 if I don't get any
comments in a few days time. If any one can have a look at it, that
would be great.

It was a build dependency for vcr, which is in turn a build dependency
for oembed.
