I did review the changes, but I agree that it is too much work for a
member of the release team, and that it was a bad decision to do this
change during the freeze.
Would you approve the unblock of a new version of the package if I
revert to compatibility level 7 and use something simpler to fix the
bug?
e.g.:
override_dh_auto_configure:
dh_auto_configure -- $(shell dpkg-buildflags --export=configure)
