  Packages with leftover files are RC buggy no matter what. And leftover
files not fixed for a month points to badly maintained package, which is
worse.

  No it's not our job. That's the QA people job, maybe. If you care
about RC buggy packages that are leaf nodes and that are candidate to
removal, then look at [0], it's what I use as input, the list is rather
short (wasn't 3 days ago, but I try to keep it under 150 packages all
time). You see a package you care about there ? Hurry to fix it.

  Given what fjp said, then, err, no. update-* are nowhere near needed
for a gnome desktop to be functional.

  Yes, the breakage is a release critical bug, which is broken enough.
