I have not yet found one, I will retry tomorrow (its 2AM here, and my
setup is quite slow).

Well, I have done the following experiment:
1) debootstrap woody
2) install desktop task + X task (so I got X+KDE+GNOME).
3) upgrade to sarge.

Everything worked smoothly, so that not too bad.
