It had some serious bug, that's why it was removed.

Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do right now, the freeze has come a
long way since. I doubt the release manager even think of disrupting our
testing cycle because of smail, unless a fixed version gets uploaded in the
next few days.

Not to mention the fact that there are several (apparently much better) MTAs
in Debian... not really comforting, but it's an alternative.

There is nothing the QA group can do to help, save marking the package as
orphaned (which I'm not suggesting to do without actual evidence of
maintainer being MIA).
