The problem is that the test files are not under a DFSG-free license, and thus are removed by the Files-Excluded stazna in debian/copyright. I don't think there is a satisfactory solution to this. Note that autopkgtest is *not* failing. It succeeds, but because it only tries to load the package (without exercising those tests).
