Bug#549493: phonon-backend-xine: Internally inconsistent with regards to device status

Package: phonon-backend-xine
Version: 4:4.3.1-4
Severity: important

When logging in a Phonon multimedia library notification appears tell me that my HDA Intel
(CONEXANT Analog) device is not working properly and that it is falling back to PulseAudio.

The login chime plays, although is crackled. Similar crackling occurs on logout.

In the Multimedia - System Settings window if I select the HDA Intel device and click Test a
chime plays. Further, there is no crackling, unlike if I select the PulseAudio backend and
click Test. Hence the backend is internally inconsistent with its definition of working.

Mplayer and VLC both function. However, mplayer defaults to [OSS] by default. Mplayer -ao alsa
works fine, however. The problem is not present on a Kubuntu 9.10 beta live CD on the same
hardware (which also uses the Xine Phonon backend). Hence the bug appears to be Debian-specific.
