I'm experiencing the same issue as the original bug reporter.
Important to note is that in my case, the bug only occurred when I stored the
password in KMail's configuration file
($HOME/.kde/share/config/kmailrc). Editing the file and removing the affected
account sections was the only way for me to
get KMail to "forget" the old password, even after removing and re-adding the
SMTP/POP accounts affected.
I'm now using the KWallet subsystem to store my KMail passwords, as a
temporary workaround.
