I'm sorry, I'm wrong about this. Permissions are reset. The problem I was experiencing with regard to the cdrom is related to the fstab entry I had for it where I use the "user" option for mount instead of "users" (`man mount' for more info). Again sorry and thanks for your attention. I can report that this bug is indeed fixed.
