I am using the most recent version of Drupal from stable.

Well, actually "using" is a little bit exaggerated. I am trying to
install using the multi-host variant.
First thing, if you just use the /drupal suffix that is provided by the
package, i.e. call drupal via yourdomain.com/drupal, then your config
file will also have to be named yoursite.com.drupal.php (notice the
".drupal" inbetween).
Found this out by looking at conf_init() in
/usr/share/drupal/includes/bootstrap.inc

Now I am going to try to find out why the CSS is not applied and images
are not loading.
