Package: splitdigest
Version: 2.4-4

This program fails to split digests so completely that I wonder why it is
included in the distribution at all. I also note that it has a bug over 4
years old, which makes me wonder if it's worth submitting a bug at all...
 =20
It's easier to give an example than to describe the problem, see
  attachments. 'd1' is a debian-user-digest and 'debianuser-0.0' is the
result of passing it through splitdigest.

Hi There,

> This may seem like a weird question, but is the 3Com

> supported under Knoppix?

I diagnosed a very strange error with one of these cards last night.
Essentially, there seemed to be some type of hardware inconsistency that
caused the card to decide it was on a 10base2 network and not a 10baseT
network.

According to the kernel documentation it would:

"Prior to January, 2001 this driver would autoeselect the 10base2 or AUI
port if it didn't detect activity on the 10baseT port. It would then
get stuck on the 10base2 port and a driver reload was necessary to
switch back to 10baseT. This behaviour could not be prevented with a
module option override.:

This was on a 2.4.18bf2-4 kernel. I didn't think that this would happen
but when I forced the module to only use 10baseT the card suddenly worked
again.

After Knoppix has loaded, have you tried manually probing the 3c509
driver(s)?

Ok, I'm confused.

I want to upgrade to X 4.3.0. I don't run xdm, so I don't think I need
"x-window-system".

Just by following links on the pacakges.debian.org site, I see this
dependecny tree:

    x-window-system
        x-window-system-core
            xserver-xfree86
                xserver-common
                    xfree86-common
            xlib*
            xfont*
        xdm
        xfs
        xnest
        xterm
        [...]

So I would think I would need x-window-system-core:

    bumby:/etc# apt-get -s -t experimental install x-window-system-core | g=
rep Inst
    Inst xlibmesa-gl-dev [4.2.1-13] (4.3.0-0pre1v4 Debian:experimental) []
    Inst xlibmesa-gl (4.3.0-0pre1v4 Debian:experimental)
    Inst xlibmesa-glu-dev [4.2.1-13] (4.3.0-0pre1v4 Debian:experimental) []
    Inst xlibmesa-glu (4.3.0-0pre1v4 Debian:experimental)
    Inst xlibmesa-dri (4.3.0-0pre1v4 Debian:experimental)
    Inst x-window-system-core (4.3.0-0pre1v4 Debian:experimental)

But that's not installing xserver-xfree86 or xfree86-common -- So the
dependencies are not on the 4.3 packages.

So maybe I need to specify those, too. So=20

    bumby:/etc# apt-get -s -t experimental install x-window-system-core xse=
rver-xfree86 xserver-common xfree86-common| grep Inst
    Inst xlibmesa-gl-dev [4.2.1-13] (4.3.0-0pre1v4 Debian:experimental) []
    Inst xlibmesa-gl (4.3.0-0pre1v4 Debian:experimental)
    Inst xlibmesa-glu-dev [4.2.1-13] (4.3.0-0pre1v4 Debian:experimental) []
    Inst xlibmesa-glu (4.3.0-0pre1v4 Debian:experimental)
    Inst xfree86-common [4.2.1-13] (4.3.0-0pre1v4 Debian:experimental)
    Inst xserver-common [4.2.1-13] (4.3.0-0pre1v4 Debian:experimental)
    Inst xserver-xfree86 [4.2.1-13] (4.3.0-0pre1v4 Debian:experimental)
    Inst xlibmesa-dri (4.3.0-0pre1v4 Debian:experimental)
    Inst x-window-system-core (4.3.0-0pre1v4 Debian:experimental)

Is that everything?

"Eventueel" is what was meant in this case.

Nah, that is a thing from the past. Actually our relations with the
Germans are quite good. And yes you are right German is different enough
to be a potential problem, but he only suggested that the chances of
finding some people that could understand Dutch would be better on the
German list. I think he is right, but I also think that my fellow
countryman just did not realize that it would be better to ask his
question in English. That shouldn't be too much of a problem as everyone
in our country old enough to use a computer has had at least a couple of
years of English in school. Well, it could be a problem if he is older
than say 60 or 70. But judging from his choice of words that seems to be
unlikely.

I still have not succeeded in solving the problem. On bootup there is
a message that loading module p80221 failed because it is already
installed in the kernel. After bootup I can modprobe prism2_pci and run
the two wlanctl-ng wlan0 lnxreq_ifstate and _autojoin commands and they
report success but ifup -a wont bring up wlan0. What should I change in
my kernel configuration?

That fixed it. Had to SU to root, then run modprobe
3c509 irq=3D10. After that, netcardconfig=20
detected the NIC and it was configured painlessly.

Thanks.

AFAIK gvim recognizes mouse input and treats it as paste (no ai,=20
maybe something else), text mode vim makes no difference between=20
keyboard input, keyboard pasting and mouse pasting.

The house I lived in as an undergrad just did renovations, and now
each of the rooms has two cat5 RJ45 jacks. One is 10mbit Ethernet,
the other is phone; you can plug a normal RJ11 phone cable into it for
lines 1-2, or use a magic splitter cable to get lines 1-2 and lines
3-4 on separate RJ11 plugs. More practical if you have more than two
voice lines in your house, though. (And we really wanted more than
one net drop per room...)

I have a very annoying problem with my XFree86 set up today.
I'm trying to get an installation from -testing and selected the
x-window-server to bring everything in.

No errors during installation.

No errors when I log in as 'root'

However, when I log in as a non-root user, it fails and I'm back at
the xdm window.

XFree86.0.log shows:

This really is strange, because I used to have this particular machine
running
as one of the best Debian machines I have.
Recently it was running Suse, but we had some differences...

But this has me stymied.

Ok, Adrien, here are some ideas :

First take a look at the relevant portio of my dmesg ( you can do the=20
same by openning a terminal and writting dmesg ).Scroll through it and=20
see if you find a similar set of lines as mine ( I use the very same card )

PDC20268: IDE controller at PCI slot 00:09.0
PCI: Found IRQ 10 for device 00:09.0
PDC20268: chipset revision 1
PDC20268: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
    ide2: BM-DMA at 0x9800-0x9807, BIOS settings: hde:pio, hdf:pio
    ide3: BM-DMA at 0x9808-0x980f, BIOS settings: hdg:pio, hdh:pio
hda: IBM-DJNA-370910, ATA DISK drive
blk: queue c0379120, I/O limit 4095Mb (mask 0xffffffff)
hdc: SONY CD-RW CRX1611, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
hdd: CD-ROM 48X/AKU, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
hde: IC35L040AVER07-0, ATA DISK drive

As you see I use a disk in the motherboard controller hda and another on=20
the Promise controler - no problem whatsoever.

You can also use lspci as a command to see info on the pci devices and=20
there you will have a line like this :

00:09.0 Unknown mass storage controller: Promise Technology, Inc. 20268=20
(rev 01)

So, now what you have to verify is if your kernel suports this driver -=20
pdc20268 .

At the terminal issue the command uname -a and see wich kernel is in use.
Mine is like this :

Linux peterpan 2.4.22.281003 #1 Tue Oct 28 12:12:30 WET 2003 i686 GNU/Linux

wich means that I am using a 2.4.22 kernel ( the rest of the numbering=20
is the date of the build).
If you have a 2.4.18 or later you are OK .Now you just have to see if=20
you have the kernel sources installed - go to /usr/src/ and see if they=20
are there .
If they are there or not I advice you first to read and put on paper=20
this document :
http://newbiedoc.sourceforge.net/system/kernel-pkg.html
You will need it to help you getting everything you need to choose what=20
modules and how to recompile the kernel (the one you have or a new one).

After that carefull reading you are now able to go into the kernel - cd=20
/usr/src/linux and do a make menuconfig
Then scroll down until ATA/IDE/MFM/RLL support, then to IDE ATA and=20
ATAPI Block devices and then enable (as a module - you don't need it in=20
the kernel because it's not your boot drive) Promise=20
PDC202{68|69|70|71|75|76|77} support .
Then follow all the instructions to build the kernel .

After everything is done you just have to put your module in the=20
/etc/modules file ( please check in your /lib/modules/"kernel number" to=20
see the exact name of the module - I think it should be pdc202xx ).It=20
would be a good idea to issue the commands (under root ) depmod -a and=20
update-modules .

I hope this is not to much at a time for you.
If you have never compiled a kernel this is a good reason to try it - if=20
you follow all the instructions on that document you will succeed .

If I forgot something, my apologies - someone will correct me, I am shure.

Good luck !

John

I've mentioned this one before, but I've just come across the link
again, so I thought I would forward it to the list for those that may be

Well Ben...Mr. Venacular...the machine Requires that you use a japanese
encoding set and language. Try downloading the debian japanese rescue
iso(http://ftp.jp.debian.org/debian/dists/stable/main/disks-i386/current/ima
ges-1.44/rescue.bin)

See how far your machine boots. I wouldn't be go to such great lengths
before exploring the obvious idiosyncrasies. If I could have the guy
decipher the text I would but he isn't at my disposal anymore. I can make it
through fdisk fine without knowing Japanse because I know fdisk. You must
realize is that you cannot install ANY English OS in this computer. PC-98
series computers follow different architecture than other IBM-PC compatible
computers. You can install NEC's Japanese Windows 95/98, load DOS/V (it
support Japanese) or load Debian Linux for PC-98 series(Japanese). I've
studied hard on this Ben...the answers I need still somehow alude me.

okay, first, a couple of general points: it's not good form or even
practical to respond to individual addresses of the list, unless they
specifically request that. in your interest, the benefit to keeping it
all on the list is that you get generally get more possible solutions
because the discussion of the problem is open to wider participation. in
the interest of those to whom you respond, we don't end up with
debian-related mail flopping around outside the space we've set up for
it. another point is that, for the sake of maintaining an easily
readable sequence, don't top post. whatever is added to the discussion
should appear at the end of the mail, not at the top. when some previous
points have become redundant to the discussion, it's okay to snip them
out, though only to the extent that there's enough of the original left
as a reference to the context of what you're adding.

alright, as to the japanese laptop issue. i don't understand why you
should be compelled to use japanese install disks, particularly since
you don't appear to be sufficiently proficient in the language to get
through fdisk. neither am i, and i also have a japanese laptop, complete
with a japanese character keyboard (along with roman characters, on each
key). i don't speak a word of the language, have no need to, but
inherited this machine from someone who did--still does, as a matter of
fact. i'm telling you all this to assure you that you don't _need_ to
use japanese install disks simply because you have a japanese laptop.

in event that there is some further condition that i'm still not getting
that would prove me wrong, let me know--but on the list. don't even cc:
to me. i read the list. okay?

ben

It does not provide any kind of security or protection what-so-ever,
whilst removing the proper way of other people / you from elsewhere

Essentially, there seemed to be some type of hardware inconsistency that
caused the card to decide it was on a 10base2 network and not a 10baseT
network.

Germans are quite good. And yes you are right German is different enough
to be a potential problem, but he only suggested that the chances of
finding some people that could understand Dutch would be better on the
German list. I think he is right, but I also think that my fellow
countryman just did not realize that it would be better to ask his
question in English. That shouldn't be too much of a problem as everyone
in our country old enough to use a computer has had at least a couple of
years of English in school. Well, it could be a problem if he is older
than say 60 or 70. But judging from his choice of words that seems to be
unlikely.

each of the rooms has two cat5 RJ45 jacks.
(And we really wanted more than
one net drop per room...)

through fdisk fine without knowing Japanse because I know fdisk. You must
realize is that you cannot install ANY English OS in this computer. PC-98
series computers follow different architecture than other IBM-PC compatible
computers. You can install NEC's Japanese Windows 95/98, load DOS/V (it
support Japanese) or load Debian Linux for PC-98 series(Japanese). I've

okay, first, a couple of general points: it's not good form or even
practical to respond to individual addresses of the list, unless they
specifically request that. in your interest, the benefit to keeping it
all on the list is that you get generally get more possible solutions
because the discussion of the problem is open to wider participation. in
the interest of those to whom you respond, we don't end up with
debian-related mail flopping around outside the space we've set up for
it. another point is that, for the sake of maintaining an easily
readable sequence, don't top post. whatever is added to the discussion
should appear at the end of the mail, not at the top. when some previous
points have become redundant to the discussion, it's okay to snip them
out, though only to the extent that there's enough of the original left
as a reference to the context of what you're adding.

should be compelled to use japanese install disks, particularly since
you don't appear to be sufficiently proficient in the language to get
through fdisk. neither am i, and i also have a japanese laptop, complete
with a japanese character keyboard (along with roman characters, on each
key). i don't speak a word of the language, have no need to, but
inherited this machine from someone who did--still does, as a matter of
fact. i'm telling you all this to assure you that you don't _need_ to
use japanese install disks simply because you have a japanese laptop.

# splitdigest.config
# configuration file for splitdigest 2.4

# $Id: splitdigest.config,v 2.6 1998/03/30 13:18:26 chris Released $

# NOTES:
#	1. Each record in this file consists of 5 fields, each field
#	terminating with a newline. All the fields are compulsory.
#	2. The first field must begin the line. Subsequent fields in
#	a record may be preceded by ONE tab. This is optional, but
#	recommended for readability.
#	3. The first field describes the signature line which splitdigest
#	will use to identify the type of digest it is dealing with. It
#	must contain a unique string which can be used to form the output
#	filename. This string must differ from other issues of the digest.
#	4. The unique string can be matched using %s for a string to match,
#	or %d for a decimal number to match. If you need to match the %
#	character itself, use %%. There must be at least ONE of such
#	specifiers, ie at least one %d or %s. There can be at most SIX (6)
#	such specifiers. The string matched for %s can be at most 511
#	characters long. The %*s and %*d options of sscanf() is supported.
#	5. The second field describes the string that will, if matched,
#	identifies the end of the digest. When this string is matched,
#	splitdigest will copy the rest of the file to the output file
#	till it encounters the next mail header.
#	6. The third field specifies the filename that you want
#	splitdigest to generate for that file. This field may contain
#	the specifiers you used in the first field. Note that the specifiers
#	must be used in the order you specified in field one. You may not
#	omit any specifier (except tail end ones).
#	7. The fourth field contains the number of hyphens (or dashes), '-',
#	that separate the header of the digest from the body.
#	8. The fifth field contains the number of hyphens (or dashes), '-',
#	that separate each message in the digest.
#	9. BLANK lines are ignored.
#	10. Comment lines must begin with '#' in the first column.
