There was a similar issue with an xchat NMU I did:

(also on kullervo; this log lists the gettext version as 0.12.1-1)
I did a quick test on crest's unstable chroot and it looks like at least my
problem isn't reproducible there (installed version 0.12.1-6); I've asked
debian-admin to install all of xchat's build dependencies there so I can do
a manual build and be able to give a definite answer.
